Lab Update: What We're Using in the Labs Right Now

General NewsA lot of equipment goes through the lab. Some of it's interesting, and we hate to send it back, other items go back with a blessing, post haste.

I thought I would list all of the equipment to do an inventory and sanity check. The list is good for the next ten days, by which time, it will have changed again.

Let's start with server systems:

An HP 585 G2, with four, twin 64-bit CPUs (AMD's thank you) and a bunch of memory. It's an industrial machine. Now we've added an HP DL 580 G5 with four Xeons and sixteen cores-- and an HP DL 585 G5 with four AMD Shanghai sockets with sixteen cores. It's lovely, if noisy.

Three identically configured HP DL-140's; 32-bit Xeons with fast clocks. A wonderful Dell 1950. Some will roll over in their grave, as I've been a long-time critic of Dell. This one's nice. Quad-core CPU, lotsa RAM, fast disks.

A Sun T2000 with Solaris. There's something re-assuring about Solaris.

There's an older twin-CPU (PPC) Xserve, and a newer one with Intel CPUs in them. They're production.

There are a gaggle of various other HP and Dell machines in the lab right now.

Now desktops and notebooks:

We have seven various Compaq and HP desktops and notebooks. Several generic machines are also in the mix. There are three Apple notebooks, and two Mac desktops. Another six machines are used as spares or for ganged-testing.

The Network

We use two DLink GBE 24-port managed switches. They're great, and a great value, too.

We have two SANs, one from HP, and another from Apple-- their XSAN Raid. There are two Brocade Silkworm 2FC switches. We need more disks-- Seagate, are you reading this?

We have two 802.11a/b/g access points, and more that we use for testing, along with a raft of Linksys, DLink, and Proxim network gear. We use Hawking antennas when necessary.

We have a small IDF and recommend Belden Cable.

The OSes We Run

We have Windows NT 3.51-Windows 2003 Enterprise; most all of them. Some are production, most are in vfds.

We have Linux: Red Hat 3+, SUSE 9+, CentOS 3+, and run Ubuntu desktops.

We run Solaris 10, MacOS 10.5.1, and Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition in production.

We have and test with images of NetBSD, OpenBSD, and Debian.

We have more software than we need.

Test Equipment

MuSystems 4000, Fluke Optiview III, AirMagnet (several apps), and also run many F/OSS apps.

This is a partial list; there's more.
